Dale Studer of Studer Shorthorns
Named 2010 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year
Dale Studer of Studer Shorthorns, Creston, Iowa, has been named as
Iowa’s Seedstock Producer of the Year. The coveted award, sponsored
annually by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, is being awarded to Dale
Studer on Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Expo Kick-Off Program; which
is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the cattle barn foyer at the Iowa
State Fairgrounds. All friends of Dale Studer and the Iowa Beef Expo
are invited to attend.
The Seedstock
Producer of the Year is a coveted award among Iowa’s Purebred breeders.
The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding cattle producers in the
seedstock industry. Each Purebred Breed Association is given the
opportunity to nominate one candidate for the award. Applications are
reviewed by a Seedstock Committee, which gives careful consideration to
producers programs in their entirety, including record keeping, industry
participation and leadership, merchandising programs, selection criteria
and herd improvement over time.
Studer Shorthorns has been in the Seedstock cattle business for 4
generations raising Shorthorn cattle currently running about 80 cows.
Performance records have also been kept for 4 generations and Studer
Shorthorns have been members of the Iowa Shorthorn Association as well
as the American Shorthorn Association. Dale has been actively involved
with the Shorthorn breed for many years. He has served several terms on
the Iowa Shorthorn Association board holding many positions including
President. Dale has also served as the Iowa delegate for the American
Shorthorn Association for over twenty years. Dale has also been
actively involved in the 4-H and FFA organizations for many years.
The Studer family has been blessed over the years to receive many
awards. Two that Dale is the proudest of include being the National
Builder of the Breed for the American Shorthorn Association and the Iowa
Builder of the Breed for the Iowa Shorthorn Association. However,
Dale’s greatest reward has been seeing Studer Shorthorn genetics work
for others.
In his own words here is a brief historical
review of his seedstock operation:
Studer Shorthorns had its beginnings under the watchful eye of Ben
Studer, Dale’s grandfather. The very first heifer Dale purchased,
Shadybrook Augusta, went on to become an All-American Senior Yearling
for him. In 1990, the family moved to southern Iowa to begin their own
legacy, which continues to unfold on a daily basis. Currently, Studer
Shorthorns maintains a sizable herd of registered Shorthorns in the
rolling hills North of Creston, Iowa.
In today’s market, Studer
Shorthorns, is committed to this industry, having the passion and
business savvy to take this cattle company to the economic level
required to succeed in this new age of agriculture. We know that this
is an ever-changing time, and we are up to the challenge to meet head on
whatever test comes our way.
Dale remains at the helm,
having demonstrated his ability of possessing "the eye of the master"
for almost five decades. He exemplifies his knowledge of the Shorthorn
breed on a daily basis, evaluating for the economically important traits
without compromise. Dale provides a no-nonsense, honest approach in the
industry.
Family has a big
part in making Studer Shorthorns work every day. Dale and Anita have
been married for 29 years and have been blessed with five children: Nate,
Kaisha, Ashley, Austin and Sarah. And as the children have gotten older
and pursued their dreams, this family continues to expand as Nate and
Ashley have both married and are actively involved in the cattle
industry today.
Studer
Shorthorns take great pride in the cattle and genetics they produce.
They have been around for four generations and will continue to grow
into the future. Their focus has been producing functional cattle that
work for the seedstock and commercial producer. They believe that “good
cattle will always sell.” No matter the type or what the operation,
everyone is always in need of good cattle that will work. These are the
kind that we strive to produce each and every year.
As the Studer family continues to grow
and pursue their careers, we do not know which path they will ultimately
travel, but they will always be a family that has deep roots in
agriculture and the Shorthorn breed. Time will only tell what the
future holds!

Duane Skarda
of Skarda Farms
Named 2009 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year
Duane Skarda of Skarda Farms,
Afton, Iowa, has been named as Iowa’s Seedstock Producer of the Year.
The coveted award, sponsored annually by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council,
is being awarded to Duane Skarda on Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Expo
Kick-Off Program; which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the cattle
barn foyer at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. All friends of Duane Skarda
and the Iowa Beef Expo are invited to attend.
The Seedstock Producer of the Year is a coveted award among Iowa’s
Purebred breeders. The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding
cattle producers in the seedstock industry. Each Purebred Breed
Association is given the opportunity to nominate one candidate for the
award. Applications are reviewed by a Seedstock Committee, which gives
careful consideration to producers programs in their entirety, including
record keeping, industry participation and leadership, merchandising
programs, selection criteria and herd improvement over time.
Duane Skarda has been in the Seedstock cattle business for 54 years
raising Angus cattle. Skarda Farms run Angus cows as well as some
commercial cows and have kept performance records for 20 years. Though
most of the cattle are sold Private Treaty, Skarda Farms offers 3 to 4
yearling bulls and a female each year at the Iowa Beef Expo. Skarda
Farms breeds most of their cows on natural heats. Their goal is to use
EPD’s and pedigrees to stress low birth weight, explosive growth and
easy fleshing ability. Skarda Farms wants their calves to get up and
grow for them as well as their customers.
Leadership positions that Duane has been involved with include being a
4-H leader in Union County, Extension Council Member in Union County. He
has also been an Iowa Angus Director – Iowa Southern, President of
Taylor County and Iowa Southern Angus Associations, Union County Fair
Board Member and Union County Cattlemen Director. Duane has received the
Union County Cattlemen of the Year award, Union County Master Cattlemen,
4-H 3rd Individual Livestock Judging Iowa State Fair, and Angus Heifer
Award winner at the Iowa State Fair. Duane has had much success in
livestock expositions, he was awarded 3rd Judging State Fair, has had 5
Iowa Beef Expo Grand Champion Bulls, 2 Reserves and 2 Grand Champion
Iowa Beef Expo Heifers along with 3 High Sellers at the Iowa Beef Expo.
Skarda Farms has exhibited 4 4-H Grand Champion Heifers, 2 4-H Reserve
Grand Champion Heifers, Reserve Champion Steer at the National Junior
Angus Show, Champion Steer at the Nebraska State Fair and Champion
Market Heifer at the Kansas City Royal.
In his own words here is a brief historical review of his seedstock
operation:
At my first county fair 4-H show, I stood next to last in class with my
steer. I decided then I needed to make some changes. I was more
interested in heifers than steers so in the fall my dad, Richard, and I
bought my first registered Angus heifer. Also, as a result of my 4-H
accomplishments and Angus records, I was selected for the Angus Award
Heifer at the Iowa State Fair. Those two females got me started and
their descendants are still in our herd.
In our first trip to the Iowa State Angus Show and Sale in 1968, we had
Champion Bull. Now called the Iowa Beef Expo and 40 years later, we had
Champion Bull again. This calf was sired by a bull we raised making it
extra special.
We decided showing cattle was a great way to advertise our offerings.
Our children and grandchildren showed at county, district, state and
national levels. They met a lot of great people and created friendships
of a lifetime along the way. In twelve years they were fortunate to
receive many awards.
Through our Angus cattle we have met a lot of great people, done hours
of visiting and made a good living. We will continue our basic routine
and never be satisfied, striving to get better and to be respected by
our fellow cattlemen and, as in the beginning, make a few changes as
needed.

Mike
Nolin of Nolin Red Angus
Named 2008 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year
Mike Nolin of Nolin Red
Angus, Monroe, Iowa, has been named as Iowa’s Seedstock Producer of
the Year. The coveted award, sponsored annually by the Iowa Beef
Breeds Council, is being awarded to Mike Nolin on Monday, February
11, 2008 at the Expo Kick-Off Program; which is scheduled to begin
at 5:30 p.m. in the cattle barn foyer at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
All friends of Mike Nolin and the Iowa Beef Expo are invited to
attend.
The Seedstock Producer of the Year is a coveted award among Iowa’s
Purebred breeders. The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding
cattle producers in the seedstock industry. Each Purebred Breed
Association is given the opportunity to nominate one candidate for
the award. Applications are reviewed by a Seedstock Committee, which
gives careful consideration to producers programs in their entirety,
including record keeping, industry participation and leadership,
merchandising programs, selection criteria and herd improvement over
time.
Mike & Dianna Nolin, Gene & Marjorie Nolin and Jessica & Wyatt
Barnett own Nolin Red Angus near Monroe, Iowa. Cattle have been a
part of their farm since 1881, with the Nolin family in the
seedstock business for sixteen years. They currently run 40 head in
their Red Angus breeding herd and have kept performance records for
seventeen years.
Leadership positions that Mike has been involved with include the
Iowa Beef Breeds Council where he serves as the current President
has been a Past President and has 6 years on the Executive Council,
the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association being on the Past Board of
Directors, and the Jasper County Township Director. Mike is a member
of the Iowa Red Angus Association and serves as the current
President, has been a Past Junior Advisor, established the junior
program and organized two National Junior Shows. Mike has also been
involved with the National Cattlemen’s Association, American Red
Angus Association, Fairview Township Trustee, Iowa Red Angus Expo
Committee, he has hosted two Iowa Red Angus Junior Field Days,
helped organize National Junior Show at the Iowa State Fair, served
as the 2006 Red Angus Beef Superintendent at the Iowa State Fair,
Missouri State Red Angus Association, Red Angus Brainstorm Session
in Denver, CO, past 4-H Leader and serves on the Iowa State
University Advisory Council for the Dean of Agriculture as the Beef
Representative.
In their own words here is a brief historical review of their
seedstock operation:
The farm that we live and operate on was purchased by the Nolin
family in 1881. Mike and Dianna began farming in 1980 and were able
to move from Des Moines to Monroe, back to the family farm, in 1987,
and purchased our first cattle in 1988, and two Red Angus heifers in
1990. We had six different breeds over several years, and during
this time learned that Red Angus were easy to keep and maintain,
especially with full-time occupations off the farm. Gradually we
phased out the other breeds and increased our numbers of Red Angus.
Nolin Red Angus began selling more breeding stock every year. Once a
year we review our operation in order to evaluate what went well and
what needs to be done better to achieve our goals. One goal is that
each animal be marketable. We sell 75% of our bull calves as bulls,
and in order to do this, breeding decisions are of the utmost
importance, due to the number of cows in our herd. In our breed, we
are selling the same number of bulls as several Iowa breeders that
have 100+ cows. In 2001 we started a hormone-free beef business to
have a place for any cattle that were not up to our breeding
standards. We have been getting 40 cents over Nebraska carcass
price, and have sold out every year. Our goal is to raise cattle
that are accepted by our commercial customers and ultimately allow
them to succeed in their enterprises.

Melford
“Jay” Sheley
Awarded
“Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo” Award
The Iowa Beef Breeds
Council has named Melford “Jay” Sheley as the recipient of the
coveted “Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo” award. Jay Sheley will be
receiving his award for his contribution and support of the Iowa
Beef Expo, now being held for the 32nd year. Jay Sheley will be
recognized and presented with an award by Iowa Beef Breeds Council
at the Kick-Off Program scheduled for Monday, February 11, 2008
beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the cattle barn foyer. All friends of Jay
Sheley and the Iowa Beef Expo are invited to attend.
Past council president Marshall Ruble commended Sheley for his
dedication and echoed Woiwood’s sentiment that he is “very
deserving” of the award.
“Jay has been on that council for a long time and he’s from the old
school of honesty and integrity—you don’t find that in a lot of
people these days,” Woiwood said. “Some people like to be nominated
for political reasons or to advance themselves, but Jay is one of
those guys who isn’t in it for himself, or even his breed, but for
everyone else and for every breed. He’s more deserving of this than
somebody who raises a lot of cattle. In all those years, he’s put
his heart and soul into the council and the Brangus board.”
Despite helping pave the way for other Brangus producers in Iowa and
volunteering with the area Brangus association and Iowa Beef Breeds
Council, 81-year-old Sheley was shocked to find out he had won the
prestigious award. “I could not believe they would even consider
me,” he said. “My mouth fell open. I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding
me. Everybody said, Nope.’ I’m very humbled by this and when anyone
gets an award like this, you think that there could’ve been people
more deserving than me. I had been involved with the council for
quite a while, so I must have made an impact.”
